Case Study

This is a chance for you to apply some of what you have learned about surfactants, rheology, and some basic calculation skills. I expect you to work in groups and to answer the questions at the end of the case study based on the drug listed next to your group number in the table below. Come to class Tuesday prepared to discuss your case study.

You are working and a women in her 30's plus a small child (Caroline) come in with a Rx to be filled. You go out to get the Rx and ask the woman for the name of the patient and the address and age to complete the information on the Rx. You learn that it is for little 5 year old Caroline, not her mother. You now ask for the child's weight and height and any allergies, etc. for you records. You learn that she is 5 years old, 37 in. tall and 43 lb. You notice that the Rx was written for the adult strength. You call the doctor. You have a positive working relationship with the Dr. because of the efforts you both have made to put the care of the patient first. You catch Dr.K. as he is on the way out of the office for his Monday tennis game with Bill Scranton. He tells you to fix it and give the child the recommended dose for someone of her surface area. He asks that you fax him the information so he can add it to her file and hangs up.

- Is there a pediatric dosage form for the drug ?
- What would be the correct dose of the drug for this patient?
- If there is no commercial dosage form available how would you make one for this child?
- Would there be any special considerations for storage etc. of this dosage form?

- What is the therapeutic use for this product?
- What advice would you give the mother about the drug for her child?

Select a spoksperson for your group and be prepared to discuss the case. At a minimum you should be able to answer the questions above about your groups drug and the conditions treated with that medication. We will not be able to get to everyone but do not take a chance that I will not call upon you.
